Mem Fox and Helen Oxenbury Viking, $24.95
There was one little baby who was born faraway, and another who was born on the verynext day.And both of these babies, as everyone knows, had ten little fingers and ten little toes.Wily Mem Fox appears to have done itagain with this engaging book for babies andtoddlers. With its softly swaying rhythms, repetitive textand cuddly illustrations, it is sure to have littliesbegging for more. However, I, too, find myself asking for more asI grapple with one point of irritation. The rhyme and premise, to me, come acrossas convenient, rather than considered, and Iwonder sometimes if the author is too quick toseize upon a winning formula at the expense ofhigher, deepertruths. As everyoneknows, we dont all fit the mould, yet were noless deserving or entitled to the same love andaffection bestowed on those who are.I dont expect every childrens book to carrythe weight of the worlds issues but this offeringseems a little light on substance. While its hard to imagine tired grown-upsgetting away with just one read my daughterloved the opportunity for warm and gentleinteraction between parent and child, and thatsa beautiful thing at the end of the day I cantescape the nagging feeling that this seeminglyperfect little bedtime story is fundamentallyflawed.Gina Cranson
